Negotiation! Do we keep negotiating at every moment?
October 01, 2017
Everyone of us negotiates one way or another. Sometimes, we keep negotiating without even realizing it. That happens in many of our daily situations and we can notice it.
For example, we find ourselves in front of an advertisement of a product of any kind and suddenly we want to know if we should buy it or not. This decision may not be taken on the spot in front of the product advertisement but we continue to think about it. The impact of the ad is such that we do not remain without concern and we end up taking a decision. What have we done by deciding or not to buy this product?
Another example: with our friends, we want to agree to have an appointment. According to our free time, each of us proposes a day. Then we realize that we did not choose the same day. In this case, we look for a solution by perhaps postponing this appointment for the following month. The choice of the time of the appointment follows and the place of the appointment comes next and so on. What are we doing in such a situation?
For this last example, let’s say that we are a logistics assistant or a sales assistant and we receive a call from a client. He is not happy about the product he purchased or the product is not the one he ordered. He asks his money back. On our side, we try to find out what happened in order to know who is guilty. Then we propose a solution to the client that consists of sending him the good product as quick as possible. The client accepts. Talking about this situation, what did we do?
In each of these above examples, it is all about negotiation. Most of the times, we negotiate either with others either with ourselves.
Negotiating with others

By negotiating with another person, we should focus on the long term. People who take part during the negotiation should be satisfied with the result. Whether those people are customers or not, we will not have a problem to deal with them the next time. We just have to let them know that we need them or we have a product or a service to offer. In that way and little by little, we will build a mutual trust.
In terms of negotiation, let's not forget that we can negotiate everything. We may not get what we want but we can talk about it. Therefore, we shouldn’t stop by only talking about the price or quantity of what we are negotiating.
We have to consider that a business negotiation should be prepared and it is better to call on the middleman if the issue is much more important. The reason is that the person who will be more professional than the other is the one that will be satisfied by getting more benefits.
Negotiating with ourselves
When we want to improve our life or improve ourselves, we choose to follow a path. On each path, we can meet lots of solutions. During our journey, we find out that we keep negotiating with ourselves in order to choose the best solution that suits our situation.
To make this task easy for us, it is possible to try this:
Knowing well ourselves
If we know enough ourselves, we will be able to identify what we really need among many other things. We will be less influenced by things that draw our attention and distract us. Usually, we do not necessarily need them. We get to know ourselves by gradually finding out our real identity, our likes, and dislikes.
Having goals to achieve
The fact of that we have goals allows us to know the path to follow. We will get what we want in achieving goals that we set. Once a goal is achieved, we should move on to the next one. Each time we are able to achieve a goal that improves our life, we improve ourselves too.
In conclusion, we do not negotiate second after second but we keep negotiating in most of the situations. In some situations, issues are important while in others, it is not the case.
